Day 174: Golden Gate Park and Lands End

Today, I planned to explore the stunning Golden Gate Park in San Francisco before catching my flight to Las Vegas. We woke up around 10 am, with Phillip rousing me from my slumber as he was keen on grabbing breakfast. Feeling groggy, I wasn’t accustomed to hostel breakfasts, preferring something more indulgent, as usual. Yesterday evening, I had already packed my bag in preparation for departure day today. It was time to move on to a new destination. My flight was scheduled to depart in the evening around 8 pm. We had a mediocre breakfast and departed around 10:50…

Day 169: A flight, a hike and a flight

Today I would go on a nice hike at Diamond Head, Oahu. I woke promptly at 5:20 am and swiftly packed my belongings into the car’s trunk. By 5:30 am, I was on the road heading north towards Kailua-Kona airport, a drive Google estimated to take around 30 minutes. Hoping to grab breakfast at Subway along the way, I was disappointed to find none open. I fueled up for the last time in Kona before proceeding to the airport. Arriving at 6 am at the Dollar Rental premises, I was greeted by a staff member who efficiently checked…

Day 119: On the other side of the world

Embark on a digging journey in Amsterdam, continue the excavation, and you’ll find yourself approximately 400 kilometers south of my current location—yes, you’ve reached New Zealand! Yesterday, at approximately 11:30 pm, I boarded my flight to Christchurch, New Zealand. I was en route to a country I had longed to visit ever since my childhood, sparked by my first viewing of Lord of the Rings. My goal was to explore as many movie locations as possible. The flight proved comfortable, free from turbulence or any unexpected disruptions. The flight lasted three hours, and as usual, I couldn’t manage…

Day 118: Goodbye Australia, you were great!

I woke up around 9:30 am, feeling exhausted due to my disrupted sleep rhythm. Today’s agenda included a visit to Eureka Skydeck 88, a must-see for panoramic views of Melbourne. I took my backpack downstairs and stored it in a locker, a service I had to pay for in this hostel, which was a bit disappointing. Until now, I hadn’t encountered any charges for luggage storage during my journey. While I appreciated the overall quality of this top-notch hostel, the cleanliness of the showers in recent days and the condition of the lockers had not met my expectations. After…

Day 69: Cairns, you can’t always throw a six with the dice

I touched down in Darwin around 3:00 am local time, en route to Cairns in Queensland, Australia. The time difference in Darwin was 1.5 hours ahead of Bali and 8.5 hours ahead of the Dutch time zone. Throughout the flight to Darwin, I enjoyed the comfort of the emergency exit seat. The flight attendant provided me with an immigrant questionnaire, featuring standard inquiries about my purpose in Australia, destination, and activities. I responded to yes-or-no questions such as whether I was a criminal or intended to reside in Australia. I found myself needing to provide a respondent address on…

Day 37: Once more a flight with Lion Air

I checked out of the hostel at 10 am. Today, my journey involved a flight with Lion Air from Padang to Yogyakarta. Before leaving, I left a small thank-you note and a chocolate bar on my bed for the housekeeping staff. I had a great experience at this hotel – it was clean, the staff was delightful, and the bed was comfortable. Leaving Padang so early felt a bit off; I had made a friend in this city, and there were still more things to explore. Plus, I had a longing to unwind on a beach and just relax for a….

Day 24: Increasing the pace, a flight to Medan

Today marked my departure from Banda Aceh as I had a flight scheduled for Medan, where other parts of Sumatra awaited my exploration. In the morning, I leisurely packed my backpack, seeking permission from the hotel staff to check out around 1 pm, which they graciously granted. I pre-arranged a taxi for the afternoon to take me to the airport, and everything unfolded according to my plan. My flight was scheduled for around 4.30 pm, and before heading to the airport, I wished to visit one of the mass graves outside Banda Aceh. The taxi driver initially misunderstood, thinking I…

Day 17: Banda Aceh, a thousand smiles

At 8 am, with some spare time on my hands, I aimed to reach Penang Airport by 11 am for my Banda Aceh flight. After breakfast, I promptly ventured outside in search of a nearby pharmacy, following the directions Milly and Jess had provided. The small pharmacy was just a 5-minute walk away, but to my dismay, I discovered it was closed, realizing it was Sunday. Frustrated, I couldn’t purchase toilet paper for my upcoming journey. Returning to the hostel, I bid farewell to Milly and Jess, planning to reunite in Europe, considering our geographical proximity. Strolling towards the harbor…
