Day 145: A busy day with big decisions

Today unfolded as a day filled with travel decisions in Auckland. While nothing particularly noteworthy occurred, the choices made held substantial influence over the future course of my itinerary. I woke up at around 9 am and the first thing I did was take a shower. The bathrooms were passable, not exactly clean, but acceptable. I skipped breakfast, but that was fine; I planned to grab something later. I cleared out my car as much as possible, stowing my backpack and daypack in my room. Some items, like my camera and my old laptop (the one I’ve been carrying since…

Day 144: Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach

Today’s agenda includes exploring Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach in New Zealand. I awoke at approximately 9:30 am and promptly departed from the hostel. Tairua, the quaint town I currently found myself in, boasted a few shops and a petite supermarket Foursquare. I purchased croissants, fudge, and some fruit. Without delay, I hit the road as my schedule was tight. I had a mere two hours to explore before making my way to Auckland. Twenty minutes later, I reached the Cathedral Cove car park, situated 15 kilometers north of Tairua. The beauty of the area captivated me. After…

Day 143: One morning in Hobbiton

Today, I’m set to explore a fantastic movie location from The Lord of the Rings—none other than Hobbiton! I rose around 9:00 am, a bit later than planned. Despite the chilly night, I managed to sleep well with my jacket on. After a quick bathroom break to freshen up, I headed out swiftly, en route to Matamata, or at least somewhere in its vicinity. Initially, my GPS was functional, but later it failed, causing some anxiety. These roads stretched for 20 kilometers without any safe spots for a u-turn. I decided to keep going and relied on the…

Day 142: Colors and steam

Today, I planned to explore Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland near Rotorua—a mesmerizing thermal park boasting numerous spectacular geothermal features. What an extraordinary day it promised to be! I awoke at approximately 9:00 am and kicked off my day. After a refreshing shower and teeth brushing routine, I ventured to the outside terrace on the first floor of the dorm. While the hostel was satisfactory, the bathroom didn’t quite meet my cleanliness expectations, but I shrugged it off. Swiftly departing from Lake Taupo, I cruised down the Thermal Highway (I do appreciate these straightforward highway names, haha). The weather was…

Day 141: ‘Let’s face it mr. Frodo, we’re lost!

Today, I planned to explore Emyn Muil, the iconic movie location featured in the opening scenes of “The Two Towers” from Lord of the Rings, where Frodo and Sam are seen lost in Mordor. Rising at 9 am, I had ample time for breakfast and to step out of my room. The weather was splendid! While the past two days were decent, today presented a cloudless sky, signaling the perfect moment to visit Emyn Muil, my chosen Lord of the Rings movie location. I headed towards Whakapapa Village, a roughly 50-kilometer drive from Turangi, reaching there by 10:30 am…

Day 140: Doing nothing in Turangi

I decided to extend my stay in the Tongariro River Retreat hostel in Turangi for another night. Today I woke up around 9:30 am. The sole purpose was to take a day off and simply relax—an essential break after the intensity of exploring so much in the past months. From the moment I arrived in this country, the ever-changing and stunning landscapes were incredible. The daily impressions and experiences, however, can eventually take a toll on you, as I’ve come to realize. I informed the cleaning lady not to tidy up my room, as I intended to book…

Day 139: Feeling tired? Indulge yourself!

Today, I spontaneously decided to visit the Tokaanu Thermal Pools in Tokaanu. At 9 am, I woke up to the sound of rain. In a hurry, I dashed to the hostel for a quick bathroom break. Though I intended to shower, time was limited—I had to leave in the next 15 minutes. I quickly brushed my teeth and had a brief shave before heading out. Exhaustion set in as I had an uneasy night, feeling a bit under the weather. Despite the captivating experiences in New Zealand, there were moments when it all became overwhelming, and the thought of heading…

Day 138: One does not simply walk into Mordor

Today, I embark on an adventure along the captivating State Highway 4 in New Zealand, where every twist and turn promises a journey filled with scenic delights. Embracing the morning vibes, I sprang out of bed, indulging in a refreshing shower and a quick tooth-brushing ritual. By 10 am, I bid farewell to the quirky hostel in Palmerston North, setting my sights on the legendary Tongariro National Park—renowned as the breathtaking backdrop for Mordor. The day ahead was tinged with uncertainty, thanks to the ominous rain forecast. However, as I stepped out, the weather seemed to defy expectations, offering…

Day 137: The Putangirua Pinnacles

Today, my destination is the Putangirua Pinnacles, the filming location of the Dimholt Road scene from Lord of the Rings. Yesterday, I arrived here to sleep in my car, ensuring I would be the first and sole adventurer on the trail this morning. And it looks like my plan has worked out perfectly! Around 10 am, I awoke to a delightful day, exactly as forecasted by Google. The sky was clear, bathed in a brilliant blue, and the sun cast its warmth. The car held a comfortable temperature, and the previous night’s chill had subsided. After attending to morning rituals…

Day 136: Chasing the movie locations, part II

Today, I planned to explore more than one Lord of the Rings movie location on New Zealand’s North Island. I woke up at 7:45 am feeling tired but knew I had to get up. The plan was to buy a parking ticket for two hours, then return to bed. By 8:15 am, I hadn’t been asked to pay yet, which seemed odd. Since I couldn’t insert any coins, I chose to go back and catch some more sleep. At 9:40 am, I woke up, feeling refreshed after some much-needed sleep. The bed was incredibly comfortable. After checking out…
