Day 155: The best shark dive in the world

Today marks the long-awaited day when I embark on the renowned shark dive in Fiji. My alarm roused me at 7:50 am, prompting me to begin my day. After a quick teeth-brushing session, I headed to the dive shop, conveniently located just 30 meters from the dormitory. While I had hoped for an available spot, my plan was to head back to bed if it wasn’t possible. Luckily, fortune favored me—some divers were absent, and I secured a spot to join them. Having pre-ordered my breakfast at the restaurant and informed them of my upcoming dive, I swiftly…

Day 151: Swimming with manta rays

Today was all about swimming with manta rays in Fiji. Rising at 7:50 am, we gathered for breakfast, and a sense of gloom settled over us as the weather was cloudy. With no particular plans, I decided to return to bed after breakfast. Meanwhile, Dan and Kim, who I met yesterday, embarked on a tour to a local village, an option I chose to skip given the $25 cost, as I anticipated visiting a village and experiencing a kava session later. Kava, a local drink crafted from a root, is known for numbing the tongue and reportedly inducing sleepiness…

Day 98: SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium

Today’s plan involved visiting SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium with Daniel. I woke up at around 10 am, once again the first one stirring in our dormitory. Still in the realm of dreams were Michele, Daniel, and the Italian couple. I attended to my morning routine, heading to the toilet and brushing my teeth, before making my way to the library. It was time to finally send an email to the insurance company. I took a snapshot of the statement from the sunglasses shop that I received a few days ago and forwarded it to the insurance company. While waiting, I…

Day 55: Final PADI course day

Once again, I awoke at 7 am, filled with excitement as today marked my final PADI course day in Amed, concluding with the attainment of my PADI diver’s license. Breakfast proved delightful with another serving of the beloved banana pancake. Arriving promptly at the diving resort around 8 am, I prepared for the final course day. The owner of the diving company sought some last-minute details for my license and requested payment of the tuition, which I promptly provided. Today’s dive site, known as ‘Amed Wall’, awaited exploration. The weather, being splendid, fueled my hopes for its continuation, enabling me…

Day 54: First ocean dive and it was awesome!

I awoke at 7 am, starting my day slowly. Anticipation filled me as I looked forward to my PADI ocean dive in Tulamben, a crucial part of my PADI course. For breakfast, I indulged once again in a delicious banana pancake. Eschewing tea or coffee, I opted for a refreshing glass of still water. Live was good at Manis Homestay. Kadek promptly delivered my breakfast, complete with a delightful plate of fruit, just 10 minutes later. She inquired about my night’s rest, and I happily shared that the bed had been remarkably comfortable. Expressing my desire to extend my desire…

Day 53: Padi Open Water license, day 1

Today marked the beginning of my PADI training in Amed, and I was eager to start my diving adventure. I woke up around 7:30, hit the snooze button on my alarm, and finally got out of bed at 8 am. After putting on my swimming trunks, I headed for breakfast. Kadek, the woman of the house, prepared a delicious banana pancake and served me some tea. The breakfast was delightful, and I expressed my gratitude to her. Choosing to stay at Manis Homestay had indeed proven to be a fantastic decision – this family was incredibly welcoming and kind. Following…

Day 4: A day at Sentosa Island

Yesterday, James and I made the decision to explore Sentosa Island, a sprawling haven of entertainment parks and intriguing places. Unfortunately, Yen couldn’t join us due to work commitments. Setting out from the hostel, James and I headed to Lavender Station around 9 am. Upon reaching Bayfront Station, we were presented with various options to reach the island. James suggested the cable car, asking, ‘So, Maarten, do you want to take the cable car to Sentosa Island?’ My response was casual, ‘I’m fine with anything. Do you want to do it?’ James agreed, saying, ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ I chimed…
